Wellington is one of the world's great compact cities — everything you need for an unforgettable family day is within a 20-minute radius. The trick is knowing where to look.
Morning: Start at the Waterfront
Begin your day at Frank Kitts Park — the playground there is one of the city's best, with a nautical theme that kids love. Arrive early and you'll practically have the place to yourselves. The fresh harbour air and wide open space is the perfect antidote to a slow Saturday morning.
From there, stroll along the waterfront towards Te Papa. Even if you don't go in, the walk itself is spectacular. Look out for the seals that sometimes pop up near Clyde Quay Wharf — spotting one is basically guaranteed to make your kid's year.
“Wellington's waterfront is arguably the best in New Zealand. And the best part? It's completely free to enjoy.”
Midday: Fuel Up at a Family-Friendly Café
By 11am, everyone will be ready for a break and a snack. Head to one of the cafés along the waterfront strip — most of them have high chairs, kids' menus, and enough space that you won't feel cramped. The flat whites are genuinely good, which matters more than you'd expect by this point in the day.
Afternoon: Te Papa or Cable Car
For younger kids, Te Papa's Discovery Centres are outstanding — interactive, free (with museum entry), and genuinely engaging for under-10s. If your children are a bit older or you've done Te Papa recently, take the cable car up to Kelburn and explore the botanical gardens at the top.
The gardens are beautiful year-round and the views over the harbour will make you remember why you live here. Or chose to visit. Either way.
Evening: Wrap Up on Cuba Street
End the day on Cuba Street for dinner. There's enough variety to keep everyone happy — pizza, noodles, burgers, vegan options — and the street's energy is always good. Kids are welcome almost everywhere, and you'll often catch a street performer or two to keep little ones entertained while you wait for food.
