Wellington's reputation for wild weather isn't unearned. But locals know the secret: some of the city's best experiences are designed for exactly these days.
1. Te Papa Museum
It's free, it's massive, and you could spend a full day here without running out of things to discover. The Awesome Forces exhibition is a must for kids — earthquake simulators, volcano zones, and hands-on science that genuinely blows minds.
2. Wellington Public Library
The central library has a fantastic children's section and regularly hosts storytelling sessions and craft workshops. Check the calendar before you go — weekends often have programmed activities for under-10s.
“On a rainy Wellington day, the city turns inward — and what's inside is often better than what's outside.”
3. Timezone or Round the Bays
If you need to tire them out completely, Timezone at Queensgate has everything from arcade machines to mini bowling. Set a budget beforehand and it becomes a surprisingly affordable afternoon.
